âI thought asteroid fields were dangerous. And would provide better cover for us.â
Victor heard Amadisâ mingled relief, disappointment, and concern as they flew into the seemingly empty belt, beating their pursuers to it by a couple of hours. âYou must watch old movies. Asteroids are usually pretty far apart. You can go for hundreds of kilometers without encountering a larger chunk. There is danger though. They occasionally collide, and the fragments then go careening through space at a high rate of speed. You donât want to be in their path should that happen.â
âHow can we hide from the pirates?â
âTheyâre relying on scans and power signatures. This field, despite the distances between larger asteroids, is dense. It produces a magnetic field that can disrupt readings. Weâre entering that field now. See? We just lost our ability to keep tabs on our friends.â
Indeed, the three blips on the star chart abruptly disappeared. Amadis grinned. âWeâre invisible to them too?â
As delighted as Victor was to have reassured her, he refused to hide the truth. âTheir ships may be newer, with better sensors. The field will mask us to an extent, but theyâll still catch our power signatures intermittently. The magnetized areas arenât constant. See? There they are again. Weâre in a thin area.â
She scowled. âThen what was the big deal about bringing us out here?â
He brought up another holographic map. âThese. See the colored areas?â
She squinted at what appeared to be no more than black space splashed sporadically with prismatic blobs of color. âWhat are they?â
âThis is a scan I created to detect magnetic fields of a certain strength. Those colored areas? At their centers should be the larger asteroids. One might provide us with the cover we need to elude Savela.â
She eyed the chart doubtfully. Victor didnât blame her. He had plenty of misgivings about his plan too, but outside of surrendering to the pirates, it was their only option.
âWill we reach any of them in time?â
âThose two.â He pointed out the closer targets. âMaybe this third, if the field scrambles their sensors long enough for them to lose us.â
âWeâre not detecting them again. It might work.â She offered him a smile. Brave lady.
